Gill Viaduct Remediation Works
The Project
During the summer of 2025, Bell Access and Engineering Ltd were engaged by Story Scotland to carry out repair works to defects which had been identified on the Grade B listed Gill Viaduct in rural Dumfries and Galloway.
Gill Viaduct is a three span underbridge constructed from ashlar masonry. It was first opened in 1850 and carries the Glasgow, Dumfries and Carlisle Railway across the Gill Water river and valley. The viaduct is over 20m high, and steep banks on either side of the river meant that access for workers and materials was going to be a considerable challenge for the team on site.
Our Method
Bell Access used rope access techniques, combined with our Sky Climber ‘Sky Stage Ultra’ suspended cradle system to access all parts of the structure safely and efficiently. Our highly skilled technicians carried out a range of works to the structure, including installation of the cable system for the Sky Stage cradle, core drilling, and masonry repairs. By carrying out rescue practices on site, we were able ensure that our technicians were prepared to act in the case of an emergency.

Work Undertaken
- 111 No. M24 vertical parapet dowels were installed ranging from 1600mm to 2500mm
- De-vegetation – 5m envelope from structure, slope clearance, full structure cleared of vegetation
- 4 No. 3m Cintec anchors installed
- 7 no. 9m spandrel ties with 545mm pattress plates weighing 76kg each were installed
- Masonry repairs across the structure ranging from stone indent, mortar patch repairs, stitching and pointing. 51 No. St Bees sandstone blocks were ordered for the project
The Outcome
Through our extensive experience of conducting remediation works on historic viaducts, we were able to complete the project ahead of schedule. By having the right people with the correct resources, and by constantly evaluating the progress of the project, we were able to ensure the safe and timely completion of another project.
